Postdoc | Health and Digital Transformation in COPD

Join an interdisciplinary research team as a Postdoc in Health and Digital Transformation for COPD, contributing to the innovative DACIL project at Maastricht University.

This 3-year postdoctoral research position is embedded within the NWO-funded project 'Developing an Digital COPD Companion for Improving Lifestyle (DACIL)' The DACIL consortium is an interdisciplinary consortium involving research groups from alpha, beta and gamma disciplines. DACIL adopts a new approach to improve the well-being of people living with COPD by assisting them to adapt a healthy lifestyle in the home environment whilst simultaneously tracking and preventing disease deteriorations with novel digital tools.

The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Maastricht is the coordinator for this project. The DACIL project consists of 6 different work packages (WP): (1) developing and monitoring of a framework for interdisciplinary research, (2) predicting changes in health status using voice and artificial intelligence, (3) developing a skin sensor to status in COPD, (4) co-design and co-creation of a digital COPD voice companion (5) testing validity and efficacy of the DACIL companion and (6) Implementation and dissemination of the DACIL companion.

The applicant will join a new and creative research group at our Department. Specific focus of this postdoctoral position will be the advancing of a digital companion through its development process from co-creation to validation in clinical trials and the development of a skin sensor that is able to monitor respiratory rate (within work packages 3-5).

The task within this postdoctoral research position include:

  • Coordinating the DACIL project; specifically the different projects relating to the development of a digital companion for people living with COPD
  • Developing a skin sensor to status in COPD
  • Initialising and coordinating clinical trials in COPD
  • Analysing results and writing scientific manuscripts
  • Supervising and mentoring PhD students
  • Teaching bachelor and master students (Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and Health in Digital Transformation)

You are enthusiastic to set up a new research line together with the PI, and to provide support to colleagues within your discipline. You enjoy to coach and mentor PhD students and guide their professional and personal development. You pose a strong desire to grow and take on increasing responsibilities while building an new research group. You pose an excellent team spirit.

  • You have a recent PhD in a relevant topic
  • You have experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods and relevant statistical analysis (R, SPSS).
  • You preferably have experience in biomedical signal analysis or machine learning models
  • You are able to plan and organise your work effectively and coordinate different research projects at the same time
  • You have experience in conducting clinical trials
  • You possess excellent networking and relationship-building skills and maintain a strong connection with the people around you.

As Postdocat Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 10 according to UFO profile Postdoc, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3226,00 and €5090,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 36 months with a scope of 0,8 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

The department of Respiratory Medicine is (inter)national distinctive in the research into mechanisms and interventions on metabolic consequences of lung diseases with a specific focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and lung cancer.
