UWC Maastricht has a part-time (0.6 FTE ) vacancy for a Teacher of English Language Learning in our Secondary School

You will participate fully as a team member in the academic department of ELL, consisting of 3 teachers and within the whole school. You will work, on average, three days per week. The timetable is to be decided.

The job

We are looking for a qualified and dynamic ELL Teacher for Secondary School (ages 11 to 18) to join our Student Services teams. You will mainly work with our DP students, age 16-18.

At UWC Maastricht the Student Services ELL specialists are responsible for the beginner to intermediate English language development of the students in their care. As well as meeting the language needs of the students, respect for their languages and cultures and their social and emotional wellbeing is an essential part of this role.

Collaboration within the Student Services teams (ELL, Special Educational Needs, University Counsellors & Counsellors) is expected. In the wider school community, collaboration is also required with the respective Heads of Year, Heads of Department, Academic Coordinators and the Leadership Team. Offering guidance and support to teachers to meet the language needs of the students in their contexts is also an important aspect of this role.

UWC Maastricht Student Services staff members are encouraged to lead a Service, Creative or Physical activity with students as part of the UWC holistic model of education.
Tasks:

  • Work with small and larger groups of students or on an individual basis for extra language support.
  • Assist in the development of all linguistic skill areas e.g. understanding, spoken production, spoken interaction, reading, writing, at an age-appropriate level whilst respecting the students' language(s) background and identity.
  • Awareness of the variables at play for each language learner as they make the transition into the new school community, language and culture.
  • Help maintain a positive relationship and balance between home and school.
  • Implement the in-house developed ELL Foundation Programme for all ELL students across the school and document each student's progress as part of this process.
  • Collaborate with class and subject teachers and provide guidance and support. Secondary ELL support consists of stand alone support. Integrated support is offered on a case by case basis at secondary.
  • Communicate between class teachers, subject teachers, Heads of Year, Heads of Department, Academic Coordinators and the Leadership team related to individual language development and well-being.
  • The option to join the UWCM Summer School team to organise and implement the UWCM Summer School Programme with our new intake of Diploma Programme students. This initiative runs two weeks prior to the start of the new academic year and dovetails into the induction week programme. There is a separate remuneration arrangement for this commitment.

Education degree and Professional experience

  • Completed Master in Education in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching.
  • Professional knowledge and skills in the English language acquisition process.
  • (international) Teaching Qualification / Certificate that qualifies for ELL and/or SLA Linguistics methodologies and knowledge of the current best practice in ELL.
  • Knowledge of the assessment levels related to the common European framework of reference (CEFR).
  • Successful experience of teaching in the International Baccalaureate MYP language B (phase 1 & 2) and the DP English B SL programmes or being an IB graduate.

Terms of Employment / Remuneration

You will get a temporary contract of employment under Dutch law: the initial contract is until August 1, 2025 and can be renewed after that.

According to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Secondary Education ('CAO VO'), the package will be commensurate with the position's responsibilities. The applicable pay scale is scale 10 in the CAO-VO, between € 3031,- and € 5030,- gross per month for a full time position, depending on relevant experience.

Participation in the school's pension plan via the ABP Retirement/Pension Fund.

Support in the application for the '30% Facility for Incoming Employees' with the Dutch Tax Authorities (if relevant).

Location: UWC Maastricht, the Netherlands.

To be able to work in the Netherlands, a (foreign) staff member must be able to successfully apply for:

  • Residence and work permits for the Netherlands.
  • A Dutch VOG (certificate of good conduct).

UWCM will assist in the application process for residence and work permits and VOG.
